It takes quite a lot to get me personally interested in Danish pipes, mainly because — Hot Take Alert! — in my opinion most Danish makers put the highest priority on how a pipe looks, while the performance is secondary… The best example for this is the popular technique of pre-coating the chambers with water glass.
Doing some research on Kai Nielsen showed something very different to me — hand-selected briar, mostly Corsican, and then air-cured for years in some cases. That shows a lot of care about how the pipe actually smokes!
Add this to superb stem work, wonderful shapes and Cumberland, and I might actually have to find myself a nice Kai pipe for my own collection.
Looking at the photos, you might have noticed that this pipe was stamped “Kaj” instead of “Kai”…
I went down quite a rabbit hole because of this. Some people online were speculating that there was another Danish maker called Kaj, or that this was Kai’s stamp for the German market, but the truth was eventually revealed in a post by fellow PipesMagazine forum member Sigmund, who actually wrote to Kai and asked him about the stamp.
Apparently, in 1993 there was a manufacturing mistake with the stamp and, since it was the only one he had, it was used for a while.
This gives us a pretty unexpected but very interesting way to date this pipe to 1993.
Thank you, Sigmund!
The pipes go through one final check before shipping, so if you notice any inconsistencies in the carnauba finish or smudges they will be taken care of before your pipe is shipped to you.
