Peterson introduced the Spigot to the market in 1977, and since then they have been some of my absolute favourites.

There are a lot of different opinions about the grade of briar used for Peterson Spigots, and from my own experience anything from the 70s or 80s tends to have flawless briar. After that, though, you start seeing a fill or two on some pipes.

The Natural Spigots are a different story — those all seem to come from the highest-grade briar, and the Golden Spigots go even further, with what I would call “Supreme” grade.

Almost all of the Golden Spigots I have worked on have been from the 90s, with just a few from the late 80s, but I had never seen one from the 70s before.

I tried to find an example of a 1977-hallmarked Golden Spigot, which would mean that the gold version was released at the exact same time as the silver one, but I couldn’t find a single example.

The first appearance of Golden Spigots I could find in a Peterson catalog is in the 1978/1979 Glass Catalog, which would mean that this 1979 pipe is one of the earliest Golden Spigots ever produced.

Last but not least is the stamp design on the gold ferrule — it is a style I personally haven’t seen on a Peterson before.

The pipes go through one final check before shipping, so if you notice any inconsistencies in the carnauba finish or smudges they will be taken care of before your pipe is shipped to you.
