I am pretty sure that this is the first pre-transition Comoy’s I ever post for sale, and the reason is pretty simple… I just keep most of them.
I had to dig deep to find any info on the Golden Grain line, but I found out that this finish was at one point, during the 1950s–1970s, Comoy’s third highest grade. They described it as an old patina look and I can totally see what they meant.
This is also the first 57 shape that I see, and even though it is a bit too untraditional for my taste, I still find it very attractive.
By now you have probably noticed that the older and the more prestigious a pipe is, the more conservative my restoration approach is. It is one thing to “doll up” a more modern lower grade pipe, but on older high grades I just hate taking material off unless it’s 100% necessary.
This approach leaves us with a couple of very minor marks of time on the pipe and a small, very smooth tooth mark on the bottom side of the stem. None of those would matter to me personally if I was to keep this pipe, and leaving them in also makes sure this pipe will get perfectly matched with a new owner who will appreciate its age and heritage.
The pipes go through one final check before shipping, so if you notice any inconsistencies in the carnauba finish or smudges they will be taken care of before your pipe is shipped to you.
