Peterson has probably explored almost every pipe shape at one point or another, and while we tend to see some shapes in almost every release, there are others that we very seldom come across. Straight Dublins already fall into that rarely seen category, but this specific shape is even more unusual.
It is actually so rare that we only have anecdotal information about the shape number… The XL88 designation comes from one single German eBay listing from a couple of years ago, but the shape itself is the Dublin Millennium. It is the only new Dublin shape from the Republic Era, and it is a gorgeous one — pretty big, with a very aggressive forward lean that gives it a completely different character from the more traditional Peterson Dublins.
The Emerald line itself is also not something you see every day. It was not specifically a high-grade line, but it is still extremely interesting and beautiful. From what I know, there were two main versions — a rusticated mahogany-stained finish and a smooth one, paired with either a green or pearl-coloured ring sandwiched between brass.
This particular pipe is a little different, though, because it is sandblasted… and what a nice blast it is. Deep, very well defined, with a beautifully pronounced pattern that works especially well on such a large and unusual shape.
The pipes go through one final check before shipping, so if you notice any inconsistencies in the carnauba finish or smudges they will be taken care of before your pipe is shipped to you.
