I just love finding and learning about more obscure Peterson lines, and the Dingle has to be one of my absolute favourites.
All the pipes I have seen from this line before have been from 1995, all of them had amazing grain and no fills in sight! This is the first one from 1994 that I have seen, and it has a stunning flame grain.
This puts them possibly somewhere in the Supreme-grade briar range for me. I mean, I am not even sure Peterson themselves knew exactly what the Supreme grade should be, because I see quite a lot of fluctuation when it comes to the grain there.
Add this to the warm stain and the elegant silver band, and you end up with a pipe that punches way over its class.
At the end of the day, I like to trust my eyes and hands more than the official grading from the companies.
In one of my YouTube videos, you can actually see me say that the Dingle 999 is my favourite rendition of the John Bull / 999 shape. It is the short stem for me — it makes the pipe even stubbier than the old John Bull shape, and I absolutely love that look.
Fun fact — all of the 999 Dingles I have seen have a curious groove across the base of the stem, and I still haven’t figured out the reason for it.
The pipes go through one final check before shipping, so if you notice any inconsistencies in the carnauba finish or smudges they will be taken care of before your pipe is shipped to you.
