When it comes to meerschaum there are two very distinct regions where this miraculous material is mined: Turkey and Africa. People tend to fall firmly on one side or the other, with Turkish meerschaum usually considered “higher quality.” I own both Turkish and African meer pipes — but I absolutely have a favourite, and that’s African meerschaum.

Even though it’s a bit heavier and can sometimes look slightly greyish, the smoking performance is outstanding. Every single thick-walled African meerschaum pipe I have ever smoked delivered a 100% cool, dry and flavourful experience. This Kiko is no exception. The shape is basically a copy of Peterson’s 999, but even a bit shorter, which for me makes it even better — compact, stubby, and incredibly comfortable.
