This is one of the last pipes from the late German actor Horst Janson’s collection.
A lot of people don’t know that most Dunhills had a two-layer stained finish, and over time the top layer gives way to the one underneath. Just like the Dress finish turns from jet black into a dark brown contrast stain, the Bruyere finish slowly loses some of the more pinkish tones and reveals a beautiful, more natural finish.
The 587 is a very elegant shape that you don’t see every day — a stack with a thin shank!
There is a bit of almost undetectable unevenness near the button of the stem, but I didn’t want to sand down an already quite thin and elegant stem… you can barely see it, even on the photos
The date stamp is a bit of a mystery to me: there’s a “9” for 1969, but then there’s an extra stamp with the number “12”, so maybe 1972… I really have no idea.
